RESUMO: Os sistemas de produção animal tem sido severamente afetada no estado do Rio Grande do Sul pela baixa oferta de milho produzido a nível estadual, especialmente não-ruminantes. A demanda do setor não é conhecida e as estimativas oficiais são imprecisas e subestimadas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar e analisar a demanda e a oferta do milho produzido no estado para a alimentação animal nos últimos 15 anos. A oferta estadual foi obtida pelo acompanhamento governamental das safras. A demanda por segmento (aves, suínos e bovino de leite e corte) foi obtida pelo tamanho do rebanho gaúcho, enquanto que a demanda total foi utilizando a mesma proporção do consumo nacional de milho em relação aos segmentos avaliados. A demanda atual de milho para a alimentação de suínos, aves e bovinos no Rio Grande do Sul é da ordem de 6 milhões de toneladas e a demanda total do estado situa-se entre 9 a 12 milhões de toneladas. A oferta estadual de milho supre pouco mais da metade da necessidade para a cadeia da proteína animal, caracterizando um déficit significativo para este setor, proporcionando instabilidade e inviabilizando economicamente esta cadeia produtiva no estado, uma vez que há alta demanda de importação de milho de outros estados.

ABSTRACT: The animal production system has been affected in the Rio Grande do Sul State by low maize production, mainly non-ruminants. The total demand is not well known and official data are inaccurate and underestimated. This research characterized and analyzed the maize grain demand and supply for animal feed in the last 15 years at the Rio Grande do Sul State. The state supply was obtained from governmental harvests measurement. The demand was obtained by the total animals (swine, poultry and dairy and beef cattle), while the total state demand was obtained using the relative national consumption from these segments in relation to the total. The current maize grain demand was at the order of 6 million tons for the feeding of swine, poultry and cattle, while total demand was between 9 to 12 million tons in the Rio Grande do Sul State. The state maize production supplied near half of the total demand for the animal protein chain, characterizing a significant deficit for this sector, providing instability and making this productive chain economically unfeasible in the state.

ABSTRACT The two main bottlenecks for a successful phytoremediation program are the metal availability in soil and the metal uptake and transfer to shoots of high biomass plants. Several agronomical practices have been tested to boost the bioavailability of metals in soils and accumulation in plants. Here we assessed the feasibility of plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) isolated from a site contaminated by gold ore processing activities to assist the phytoremediation of As, Cd, and Pb by Sorghum bicolor and mitigate the metal toxicity in plants. The bacteria Kluyvera intermedia, Klebsiella oxytoca, and Citrobacter murliniae were evaluated in single, double, and triple inoculations. They are regarded as metal resistant and were isolated from the rhizosphere of species naturally growing on the metal contaminated site. The treatments comprised two soils (contaminated and non-contaminated) and single (K. intermedia, K. oxytoca, or C. murliniae) or multiple inoculations (K. intermedia + K. oxytoca; K. intermedia + C. murliniae; K. oxytoca + C. murliniae; K. intermedia + K. oxytoca + C. murliniae). Plants were grown for 42 days after inoculation. The results showed that the PGPB K. oxytoca and the combination of K. intermedia + K. oxytoca and K. intermedia + C. murliniae were able to mitigate the metal toxicity in the contaminated soil and hence increase the shoot biomass, with implications to the effectiveness of phytoextraction. The sorghum ability to translocate Cd to shoots in the contaminated soil was enhanced through the single inoculation with K. oxytoca, C. murliniae, and K. oxytoca, as well as by the joint-inoculation with K. oxytoca + C. murliniae, and K. intermedia + K. oxytoca + C. murliniae. Higher accumulation of metals in shoots is a crucial factor in successful phytoextraction. Arsenic and Pb, on the other hand, had their uptake and concentration in roots stimulated by the inoculation. Therefore, regarding these two metals, phytostabilization programs could benefit from the use of the bacteria studied here.

RESUMO: Os solos de várzea são caracterizados pela alta suscetibilidade à saturação por água. Esta condição anaeróbica é geralmente encontrada em solos arrozeiros e altera o processo de decomposição dos compostos orgânicos do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade microbiana e enzimática de um solo de várzea sob diferentes teores de umidade no solo. Um Planossolo historicamente cultivado com arroz irrigado foi utilizado para avaliar a atividade microbiana e enzimática em tratamentos com diferentes níveis de umidade do solo, sendo: i) 60% de capacidade de campo (CC) (60%CC); ii) 100% da CC (100%CC); iii) solo inundado com uma camada de água de 2 cm acima da superfície do solo; e iv) solo mantido a 60%CC com inundação após 29 dias da incubação. A maior atividade microbiana do solo foi observada no tratamento 100%CC, sendo 41% maior que o tratamento 60%CC e 2% maior que tratamento inundado. Os dados da atividade enzimática pela hidrólise do diacetato de fluoresceína (FDA) corroboraram a maior liberação de CO2 nos tratamentos com maior umidade do solo. Diferentemente dos resultados encontrados, as principais metodologias para avaliação da atividade microbiana ainda recomendam manter o solo com umidade próxima a 60% da CC. No entanto, em solos de várzea com históricos de cultivos de arroz, a manutenção de umidade próxima a 60% da CC pode limitar a atividade microbiana. A técnica de respiração do solo pode ser usada para avaliar a atividade microbiana em condições de solo inundado. No entanto, mais estudos devem ser realizados para entender o efeito do histórico de cultivo na comunidade microbiana nesses ambientes.

ABSTRACT: The lowland soils are characterized by high susceptibility to water saturation. This anaerobic condition is usually reported in paddy fields and alters the decomposition process of soil organic compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the soil microbial and enzymatic activity of a lowland soil at different soil moisture contents. A poorly drained Albaqualf cultivated with irrigated rice was used to evaluate microbial and enzymatic activity in treatments with different levels of soil moisture, being: i) 60% of field capacity (FC) (60%FC); ii) 100% of FC (100%FC); iii) flooded soil with a 2 cm water layer above soil surface, and iv) soil kept at 60%FC with late flood after 29 days the incubation. The greater soil microbial activity was observed in the 100%FC treatment, being 41% greater than 60%FC treatment and only 2% higher than flooded treatment. The enzymatic activity data by fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis corroborated the higher CO2 release in treatments with higher soil moisture content. Differently from the results reported, the main methodologies to evaluate microbial activity still recommend maintenance of the soil with a moisture content close to 60% of the FC. However, in lowland soil with history of frequent paddy fields, the maintenance of moisture close to 60% of the FC can limit the microbial activity. The soil respiration technique can be used to evaluate the microbial activity in flooded soil conditions. However, further studies should be conducted to understand the effect of the cultivation history on the microbial community of these environments.

RESUMO A produção de resíduos tem aumentado em proporção direta com a industrialização dos países. Sendo assim, a disposição adequada desses resíduos é uma questão largamente discutida entre os órgãos ambientais. Por isso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o efeito residual de adições sucessivas de resíduos de curtume e da mineração de carvão sobre as propriedades químicas do solo e o acúmulo de cromo (Cr) em mamoneira. Os tratamentos aplicados em condições de campo foram: T1 - controle, ou seja, solo sem adubação; T2 - solo adubado com nitrogênio-fósforo-potássio (NPK) + calcário para atingir pH 6,0; T3 - solo misturado com lodo de curtume em dose adequada para se atingir pH 6,0 + PK; T4 - solo receptor de duas vezes a dose de lodo de curtume utilizada no T3 + PK; T5 - solo misturado com resíduo carbonífero + NPK + calcário em quantidade adequada para atingir pH 6,0; T6 - solo misturado com resíduo carbonífero + lodo de curtume em dose adequada para atingir pH 6,0 + PK; T7 - solo misturado com serragem cromada + NPK + calcário em quantidade adequada para atingir pH 6,0; T8 - solo misturado com Cr mineral + lodo de curtume em dose adequada para se atingir pH 6,0 + PK. Em campo, o solo recebeu os diferentes tratamentos. Posteriormente, amostras desse solo foram acondicionadas em vasos e o experimento com as plantas foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com três repetições por tratamento. O rendimento de matéria seca mostrou que a aplicação de serragem cromada (T7) proporcionou o maior crescimento da mamoneira, bem como os maiores teores de P no seu tecido. Os teores de Cr na parte aérea das plantas não atingiram níveis que podem ser considerados de contaminação desses vegetais. A distribuição desse elemento nas diferentes partes das plantas de mamoneira demonstrou a possibilidade de utilização futura dos grãos para produção de biodiesel.

ABSTRACT The production of waste has been increasing in direct proportion to the industrialization of the countries. Therefore, the adequate disposal of these wastes is an issue widely discussed among environmental agencies. Thus, the aim of this work was to study the residual effect of successive additions of tannery and coal mining waste on the chemical properties of the soil and the accumulation of chromium in castor bean plants. The treatments applied under field conditions were: T1 - control, that is, soil without fertilization; T2- soil fertilized with nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) + limestone to reach pH 6.0; T3 - soil mixed with tannery sludge at a dose adequate to reach pH 6.0 + PK; T4 - soil receptor of twice the dose of tannery sludge used in treatment 3 + PK; T5 - soil mixed with coal residue + NPK + limestone in an amount adequate to reach pH 6.0; T6 - soil mixed with coal residue + tannery slurry at a dose adequate to reach pH 6.0 + PK; T7 - soil mixed with chrome sawdust + NPK + limestone in adequate quantity to reach pH 6.0; T8 - soil mixed with mineral Cr + tannery sludge at a dose adequate to reach pH 6.0 + PK. In the field, the soil received the different treatments. Subsequently, samples of this soil were conditioned in pots and the experiment with the plants was conducted in a completely randomized design, with three replicates per treatment. The dry matter yield showed that the application of chrome sawdust (T7) provided the highest growth of the castor bean, as well as the higher levels of P in its tissue. Chromium content in the aerial part of the plants did not reach levels that can be considered as contamination of these plants. The distribution of chromium in the different parts of the castor bean plants demonstrated the possibility of future use of the grains to produce biodiesel.

RESUMO A qualidade de vida é intrinsecamente ligada à disponibilidade de água, e a poluição desse recurso afeta diretamente as populações. O Lago Guaíba possui importância histórica, econômica e cultural para Porto Alegre (RS) e região metropolitana. Este trabalho discute o contexto histórico-cultural da poluição do Lago Guaíba. Com grande região hidrográfica, o lago sofre diversos impactos ambientais e, ao mesmo tempo, possui múltiplos usos para suas águas. Apesar da grande importância do Lago Guaíba para a região metropolitana de Porto Alegre, há um histórico descaso com sua qualidade. O lago apresenta-se poluído, com percepção pública dessa realidade e limitação de usos diretos de suas águas.

ABSTRACT The quality of life is intrinsically linked to water availability; however, pollution on this resource directly affects people. Lake Guaíba has a historical, economic and cultural importance to Porto Alegre (RS, Brazil) and its metropolitan region. This report discusses the historical and cultural context of Lake Guaíba’s pollution. With a large watershed, Lake Guaíba suffers many environmental impacts and, at the same time, has multiple uses for its waters. Despite the great importance of Lake Guaíba to Porto Alegre metropolitan region, there is a historical disregard with its quality. The lake is polluted and there is a public perception of this reality with direct limitation of its water’s use.

Resumo O Arroio Dilúvio percorre uma área com grande densidade populacional em Porto Alegre, sul do Brasil. A influência antrópica no entorno impacta negativamente na qualidade dos sedimentos do Arroio Dilúvio e do Lago Guaíba. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade físico-química em sedimentos superficiais do Arroio Dilúvio. Adicionalmente, comparou-se a concentração de vários metais na seção com estudos prévios das margens do Lago Guaíba, próximo à foz do Dilúvio, para avaliar o impacto da urbanização na poluição dos sedimentos por metais pesados. Avaliou-se pH, densidade aparente, granulometria, condutividade elétrica, carbono orgânico, fósforo assimilável, nitrogênio total, composição mineralógica (difratometria de raio X) e concentração pseudo total diversos metais (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Mn, Ba, Zn, V, As, Pb, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Cd, Mo e Se). Os resultados demonstram que os sedimentos são predominantemente arenosos, com níveis de poluição por metais pesados abaixo dos valores de referência de qualidade. Quartzo e feldspato predominaram em todos os pontos. A concentração de Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr e Ni foram menores do que as observadas nas margens do Lago Guaíba próximos a foz do Dilúvio, possivelmente devido à presença de fontes de poluição na área canalizada. O Arroio Dilúvio mostra indicações de influência antrópica na concentração de metais pesados através da área canalizada.

Abstract Dilúvio Stream flows through an area with a great population density in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil. The anthropogenic influence in the surroundings impacted negatively the quality of the sediments of Dilúvio Stream and Lake Guaíba. This study evaluated the physico-chemical variability of surface sediments in a non-channeled section of Dilúvio Stream. Additionally, we compared the concentration of several heavy metals in this section with data from previous studies in the margins of Lake Guaíba near the outflow of Dilúvio Stream in order to evaluate the impact of urbanization on sediment pollution. The pH, bulk density, particle-size distribution, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, assimilable phosphorus, total nitrogen, mineralogical composition (X-ray diffractogram) and pseudo total concentration of several metals (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Mn, Ba, Zn, V, As, Pb, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Cd, Mo, and Se) were evaluated. The results showed that the sediments in the non-channeled section of Dilúvio Stream are predominantly sandy, with heavy metal contents below the quality reference values. Quartz and feldspar predominated in all sites. The concentration of Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Ni were lower than that observed in the margins of Lake Guaíba near the outflow of Dilúvio Stream, possibly due to pollution input throughout the channeled section. The Dilúvio Stream shows indications of an anthropogenic influence in the heavy metals concentration through the channeled area.

Resumo A grande densidade populacional nas metrópoles gera impactos socioambientais que afetam diretamente os recursos hídricos locais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os dados históricos (entre 2000 e 2014) de monitoramento de água e sedimentos na região Delta de Jacuí e analisar a relação entre esses locais. Foram avaliados sete locais de monitoramento entorno do Delta de Jacuí: foz dos rios Jacuí, Caí, Sinos e Gravataí; canais Ilha da Pintada e Navegantes; e Lago Guaíba. Os dados de água foram avaliados para: temperatura do ar e da água; profundidade; pH; condutividade elétrica; transparência; turbidez; oxigênio dissolvido; demanda bioquímica de oxigênio; fósforo; nitrogênio; resíduos totais; e escherichia coli. Os sedimentos foram avaliados para concentrações pseudo-totais de metais (Al, Fe, Ca, Mn, Ba, V, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, Li, Be, Cd, Hg, As e Ag). A qualidade da água e dos sedimentos no delta de Jacuí está ligada aos afluentes e fluxos prioritários dos canais. Os dados históricos de água e sedimentos no Delta de Jacuí mostram a influência dos afluentes com baixa qualidade nos pontos a jusante. A poluição dos rios Caí, Sinos e Gravataí afeta negativamente a qualidade ambiental do canal Navegantes e do Lago Guaíba (pontos de captação para abastecimento hídrico). A água nesses locais apresenta reduções no oxigênio dissolvido e grandes valores de coliformes e o sedimento apresenta grandes concentrações dos metais Zn, Pb, Cr e Hg. Apesar da redução ao longo dos anos nos valores de Pb e Hg no sedimento, a poluição dos rios tributários ainda persiste.

Abstract The high population density in a metropolis leads to socio-environmental impacts that directly affect local water resources. This work evaluated the historical data (between 2000 and 2014) of water and sediment monitoring in the Jacuí’s Delta region and analyzed the relationship between these sites. Seven monitoring sites around the Jacuí's Delta were evaluated: the outflow of the rivers Jacuí, Caí, Sinos, and Gravataí; the channels Ilha da Pintada and Navegantes; and Lake Guaíba. Water data were evaluated for: air and water temperature; depth; pH; electrical conductivity; transparency; turbidity; dissolved oxygen; biochemical oxygen demand; phosphorus; nitrogen; total residues; and escherichia coli. Sediment were evaluated for pseudo-total concentrations of metals (Al, Fe, Ca, Mn, Ba, V, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, Li, Be, Cd, Hg, As, and Ag). The quality of water and sediment in the Jacuí's Delta are linked with the tributaries and priority flows of the channels. The historical data of water and sediment around the Jacuí's Delta shows the influence of the tributaries with low quality in the downstream points. The pollution of the rivers Caí, Sinos, and Gravataí negatively affects the environmental quality of the channel Navegantes and Lake Guaíba (catchment points to water supply). The water in those sites presents reductions in dissolved oxygen and high values of coliforms, and the sediment shows high concentrations of metal Zn, Pb, Cr, and Hg. Despite the reduction in Pb and Hg values in the sediment over the past years, pollution from the tributary rivers still persists.

ABSTRACT There is a complex interaction between various components of the soil ecosystem, including microbial biomass and soil chemical contaminants such as heavy metals and radionuclides, which may greatly affect the efficiency of bioremediation techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate microbial capacity to change pH, changes in the metal soluble-exchangeable fraction, and effects of initial heavy metal contents on soil samples in microbial solubilization/immobilization capacity. The soil samples used in this study were collected at a known metal-contaminated site. Three highly metal-resistant bacteria were isolated from rhizosphere soil samples collected on weed species identified as Senecio brasiliensis, Senecio leptolobus, and Baccharis trimera. A completely randomized experimental design in a factorial arrangement was used, with three replicates. In general, with an acid pH, the isolates neutralized the contaminated growth media. In a neutral or basic initial pH, increases in pH were observed in the media, so these bacteria have an alkalizing effect on the growth media. Soluble metal contents were quite different and depend on the microbial species and heavy metal contents in the soil samples. The soluble-exchangeable fraction of metal such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Ba may be unavailable after inoculation with heavy metalresistant rhizobacteria. A promising approach seems to be the application of inoculants with metal-resistant bacteria in bioremediation of multi-metal-polluted environments to improve the efficiency of this environmentally friendly technology.

RESUMO: A destinação final adequada dos resíduos sólidos industriais é um dos principais problemas ambientais. A disposição de resíduos orgânicos em solos pode ser recomendada, dado o potencial corretivo e fertilizante deste. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito em solos da adição de doses de lodo de estação de tratamento de efluentes (ETE) de um aterro industrial na atividade microbiana, avaliada pela mineralização de carbono. Foi desenvolvido experimento em frascos respirométricos, analisando a mineralização de carbono em três solos, com cinco doses de lodo durante 91 dias de incubação. A aplicação de lodo com 2Mg ha-1 causou menores impactos à microbiota do solo, não apresentando diferenças em relação ao tratamento controle. Os valores de carbono mineralizado aumentaram com o tempo de incubação em função da adição do lodo, proporcionalmente ao aumento das doses de lodo. A atividade microbiana aumentou com a aplicação de doses de lodo de ETE de aterro industrial, sendo a mineralização de carbono proporcional às doses adicionadas.

ABSTRACT: The final disposal of industrial solid waste is a major environmental problem. Disposal of organic wastes in soils can be recommended as corrective and fertilizer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different doses of wastewater treatment plant sludge (WWTP) from an industrial landfill on soils based in microbial activity measured by carbon mineralization. The experiment was developed in respirometric flasks, analyzing carbon mineralization in three soils with five doses of sludge during 91 days of incubation. Application of sewage sludge with 2 Mg ha-1 caused minor impacts on soil microorganisms, without statistical differences to the control treatment. Amounts of mineralized carbon increased with the time course due to the addition of sludge, proportional to the doses of sludge. Microbial activity increased with the application of WWTP sludge doses of industrial landfill, with mineralization proportional to the increase in carbon added doses.

ABSTRACT Bioavailability of heavy metals at contaminated sites is largely controlled by the physicochemical properties of the environmental media such as dissolved organic matter, hydroxides and clay colloids, pH, soil cation exchange capacity and oxidation-reduction potential. The aim of this study was to investigate soil pH and heavy metal solubility effect by levels of humic and fulvic acids applied in soil samples with different levels of contamination by heavy metals. The soil samples used in this study were collected in a known metal-contaminated site. Humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) were purchased as a commercially available liquid material extracted from Leonardite. The experiment was carried out in a factorial scheme of 4 × (4 + 1), with four contaminated soil samples and four treatments, comprised of two levels of HA, two levels of FA and a control. The HA treatments increased the solubility of Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, As and Ba from soils, while FA treatments decreased, thus raising or not their availability and mobility in soil. Humic acid concentration did not influence soil pH and FA decreased soil pH until 0.7 units. The initial heavy metal concentration in soil affects the magnitude of the processes involving humic substances. The lower releases of heavy metals by FA verified the importance of the complexation properties of organic compounds. These results appear to encourage the use of HA for increased plant-availability of heavy metals in remediation projects and the use of FA for decreased plant-availability of heavy metals at contaminated sites with a risk of introducing metals into the food chain.

A utilização de efluentes industriais tratados na irrigação do arroz por alagamento pode provocar alterações eletroquímicas e aumentar o teor de nutrientes na solução do solo. Para testar essa hipótese, este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a dinâmica dos atributos químicos e eletroquímicos da solução do solo sob cultivo de arroz irrigado com lixiviado industrial tratado, contendo 820 mg L-1 de Na. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se como unidades experimentais vasos preenchidos com 20 kg de solo, em delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com três repetições. Os tratamentos foram: controle (irrigação com água destilada) e quatro proporções do lixiviado (25, 50, 75 e 100 %). As coletas de solução do solo foram feitas semanalmente a partir do quarto dia após o início do alagamento (DAA) até 84 DAA. A solução do solo foi amostrada na profundidade de 10 cm e analisada para os principais nutrientes e o Na, bem como para a demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO5), relação de adsorção de sódio (RAS), condutividade elétrica (CE) e potencial redox (EH). A irrigação com o lixiviado aumentou os teores de K, Ca, Mg, S, P, N-NH+4, N-NO−3 e Na, assim como os valores de RAS e CE, para valores considerados prejudiciais para as plantas. Foi observada diminuição do potencial redox na solução do solo pela irrigação com lixiviado industrial tratado. Os teores de DBO5 e o N-NH+4 diminuíram com o tempo de alagamento. Em proporções menores que 25 %, o lixiviado industrial tratado pode aumentar os teores de nutrientes em solução sem causar interferência do Na para as plantas.

The use of treated industrial wastewater in flood irrigation of rice may cause electrochemical changes and increase the nutrient content in the soil solution. To test this hypothesis, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the dynamics of the chemical and electrochemical properties of the soil solution under flooded rice irrigated with treated industrial leachate containing 820 mg L-1 of Na. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using pots filled with 20 kg of soil in a randomized block design with three replications. The treatments were control (irrigation with distilled water) and four ratios of the leachate (25, 50, 75, and 100 %). Samples of soil solution were taken weekly from the fourth day after the start of flooding (DAF) until 84 DAF, The soil solution was sampled by means of 50 mm diameter PVC collectors at 10 cm depth, and analyzed for key nutrients and Na, as well as for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), electrical conductivity (EC), and redox potential (EH). Irrigation with leachate increased the levels of Ca, Mg, S, P, NH+4 -N, NO−3-N and Na, as well as the values of the SAR and the value of EC, to levels considered harmful to plants. A decrease in EH was observed in the soil solution through irrigation with treated industrial leachate. The levels of BOD5 and NH+4 -N decreased with time of flooding. At proportions of less than 25 %, the treated industrial leachate can increase the levels of nutrients in the soil solution without Na reaching critical levels for plants.

O manejo, em termos de preparo e sistemas de culturas, exerce forte influência sobre as propriedades do solo; e essas, por sua vez, condicionam o seu potencial supressivo a doenças de plantas. Nesse contexto, a fungistase é um dos componentes da supressividade, sendo um processo mediado pela microbiota do solo. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência de diferentes sistemas de manejo sobre a fungistase ao fungo fitopatogênico Fusarium graminearum, a sua relação com o perfil bacteriano do solo e os possíveis mecanismos de ação envolvidos no processo. As avaliações foram realizadas a partir de amostras de um Argissolo Vermelho distrófico, coletadas em um experimento de manejo de longa duração, conduzido sob plantio direto e preparo convencional e cultivado com os sistemas de culturas aveia + vica/milho + caupi, vica/milho e aveia/milho. A fungistase do solo foi avaliada em termos de redução do crescimento radial do fungo testado. O perfil bacteriano foi avaliado pelo polimorfismo do espaço intergênico do 16S rRNA (RISA). Foram obtidos 120 isolados bacterianos, que foram avaliados quanto à antibiose e à produção de compostos voláteis e de sideróforos. As amostras provenientes de plantio direto apresentaram maior fungistase a F. graminearum, reduzindo acentuadamente o desenvolvimento do patógeno. Também foi observada maior inibição do patógeno nas amostras de solo cultivadas sob o sistema aveia + vica/milho + caupi, enquanto o sistema aveia/milho foi o menos antagonista. O perfil genético bacteriano do solo também foi influenciado pelos sistemas de manejo, havendo semelhança entre os sistemas mais antagonistas. Embora não tenha sido identificada uma relação entre os sistemas de manejo e as características dos isolados, pode-se concluir que a antibiose e a produção de sideróforos foram os mecanismos que mais contribuíram para a fungistase.

Soil management, in terms of tillage and cropping systems, strongly influences the biological properties of soil involved in the suppression of plant diseases. Fungistasis mediated by soil microbiota is an important component of disease-suppressive soils. We evaluated the influence of different management systems on fungistasis against Fusarium graminearum, the relationship of fungistasis to the bacterial profile of the soil, and the possible mechanisms involved in this process. Samples were taken from a long-term experiment set up in a Paleudult soil under conventional tillage or no-tillage management and three cropping systems: black oat (Avena strigose L.) + vetch (Vicia sativa L.)/maize (Zea mays L.) + cowpea (Vigna sinensis L.), black oat/maize, and vetch/maize. Soil fungistasis was evaluated in terms of reduction of radial growth of F. graminearum, and bacterial diversity was assessed using ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA). A total of 120 bacterial isolates were obtained and evaluated for antibiosis, and production of volatile compounds and siderophores. No-tillage soil samples showed the highest level of F. graminearum fungistasis by sharply reducing the development of this pathogen. Of the cropping systems tested, the vetch + black oat/maize + cowpea system showed the highest fungistasis and the oat/maize system showed the lowest. The management system also affected the genetic profile of the bacteria isolated, with the systems from fungistatic soils showing greater similarity. Although there was no clear relationship between soil management and the characteristics of the bacterial isolates, we may conclude that antibiosis and the production of siderophores were the main mechanisms accounting for fungistasis.

O uso de inoculantes na cultura do milho tem sido cada vez mais valorizado, em vista dos benefícios que pode trazer à cultura, como a fixação biológica do nitrogênio e o aumento da quantidade de raízes. Isto pode melhorar a absorção de água e nutrientes pela planta, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento do milho, principalmente em períodos de seca. Este estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar, em condições de campo, as características agronômicas e o rendimento de grãos de híbridos de milho, inoculados, ou não, com uma mistura de três espécies de Azospirillum (A. brasilense, A. lipoferum, A. oryzae). Foram avaliados o teor relativo de clorofila nas folhas, a altura de planta, a senescência foliar, os componentes de rendimento de grãos, o teor de N, a matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas e o número mais provável de bactérias diazotróficas na rizosfera das plantas. A inoculação manteve o teor de clorofila significativamente maior até o estádio R3 das plantas, para os três híbridos testados, aumentou o rendimento da matéria seca da parte aérea, dos híbridos AS 1575 e SHS 5050, o peso de 1000 grãos, para o híbrido P32R48 e altura, para o AS 1575. Houve interação entre os genótipos de milho e as bactérias inoculadas, visto que, cada híbrido testado respondeu de forma diferente à inoculação. A inoculação de Azospirillum em milho demonstrou estimular o desenvolvimento das plantas no período vegetativo, aumentando a probabilidade de obter-se um estande de plantas uniforme, maior resistência ao estresse e maior concentração de clorofila nas folhas.

The use of inoculants in maize crops has been increasing due to benefits that it brings to the plants such as nitrogen biological fixation and increase in root growth. This can lead to better water and nutrient absorption by the plants, contributing to the plant development, mainly in dry weather periods. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic features of maize hybrids inoculated with a mixture of three species of Azospirillum (A. brasilense, A. lipoferum, A. oryzae), under field conditions. The relative leaf chlorophyll content, plant height and leaf senescence were evaluated during the maize cycle. After harvest, the components of grain yield, N content and dry mass of the leaves, and the most probable number of N fixers in the rhizosphere of the plants were analyzed. The inoculation increased the chlorophyll content in the maize leaves until the R3 stage, for the three hybrids tested. It also increased the dry mass of shoots of the hybrids AS 1575 and SHS 5050; the 1,000 grain weight of the hybrid P32R48; and height of AS 1575. It was found an interaction between maize genotypes and inoculated bacteria, since each hybrid tested responded differently to the inoculation. The inoculation of Azospirillum on maize promotes the development of plants in the growing season, increases the probability of obtaining a uniform plant stand, better resistance to stress and better concentration of chlorophyll in the leaves.

Phenanthracene is a highly toxic organic compound capable of contaminating water and soils, and biodegradation is an important tool for remediating polluted environments. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of trace elements, cations, and environmental conditions on the activity of the protocatechol 3,4-dioxygenase (P3,4O) enzyme produced by the isolate Leifsonia sp. in cell-free and immobilized extracts. The isolate was grown in Luria Bertani broth medium (LB) amended with 250 mg L-1 of phenanthrene. Various levels of pH (4.0-9.0), temperature (5-80 °C), time (0-90 min), trace elements (Cu2+, Hg2+ and Fe3+), and cations (Mg2+, Mn2+, K+ and NH4+) were tested to determine which conditions optimized enzyme activity. In general, the immobilized extract exhibited higher enzyme activity than the cell-free extract in the presence of trace elements and cations. Adding iron yielded the highest relative activity for both cell-free and immobilized extracts, with values of 16 and 99 %, respectively. Copper also increased enzyme activity for both cell-free and immobilized extracts, with values of 8 and 44 %, respectively. Enzyme activity in the phosphate buffer was high across a wide range of pH, reaching 80 % in the pH range between 6.5 and 8.0. The optimum temperatures for enzyme activity differed for cell-free and immobilized extracts, with maximum enzyme activity observed at 35 ºC for the cell-free extract and at 55 ºC for the immobilized extract. The cell-free extract of the P3,4O enzyme exhibited high activity only during the first 3 min of incubation, when it showed 50 % relative activity, and dropped to 0 % after 60 min of incubation. By contrast, activity in the immobilized extract was maintained during 90 min of incubation. This isolate has important characteristics for phenanthrene biodegradation, producing high quantities of the P3,4O enzyme that forms part of the most important pathway for PAH biodegradation.

O cobre é um micronutriente essencial para todos os seres vivos, porém em grandes concentrações pode causar sérios problemas ambientais. Áreas de vitivinicultura são áreas com contaminação potencial de cobre, devido a intensa e contínua aplicação de produtos agrícolas contendo este elemento em sua formulação. Áreas de rejeito de mineração de cobre também são áreas de grande risco à saúde dos seres vivos, pois são extensões com altas concentrações de cobre e com potencial para a contaminação de áreas adjacentes. A utilização de técnicas eficazes para a remediação destas áreas é necessária para a redução do impacto negativo e melhoria das condições ambientais. O objetivo desta revisão foi abordar os principais aspectos envolvidos na biorremediação de áreas contaminadas com cobre e indicar possibilidades para a melhoria da eficiência do processo. A biorremediação de áreas contaminadas pode ser mais eficaz quando utilizados microrganismos resistentes e eficientes, isolados de áreas contaminadas, juntamente com a utilização de plantas remediadoras e hiperacumuladoras de cobre.

Copper is an essential micronutrient to all living organisms, although in high concentrations it can cause environmental problems. Vineyard areas are potential copper-contaminated sites due to intense and constant use of sprays containing copper in formulation. Copper mining waste areas also have high copper concentrations with high potential to contaminate adjacent areas. Use of efficient techniques for remediation of these areas is necessary to reduce negative impacts and improve environmental conditions. Organisms such as plants, fungus and bacteria are efficient alternatives and coast-friendly to all involved parts. The objective of this review is to discuss the main aspects of bioremediation of copper-contaminated areas and show some research aspects to optimize the process. Bioremediation of contaminated areas can be more efficient when efficient and resistant microorganisms isolated from copper-contaminated areas are used together with copper hyperaccumulator plants.
